* * * *

Niall was bothered. Even though he’d talked to Val, he still didn’t know how to behave with Billy, and he was about to spend another dinner with him. Billy might even stick around, but Niall had no idea how to feel about Billy except conflicted, which didn’t help.

Maybe Billy wouldn’t be rude today. Niall had promised himself he would be careful about what he said to Billy and how he behaved, so it wouldn’t be his fault if something happened. For some reason, that didn’t make Niall feel as good as it should.

He’d arranged to meet with his siblings in front of the apartment building where Maris lived. He shuffled from foot to foot, waiting for them and wishing he had something to do with his hands. Maybe there was something to smoking, although he would never start, not after what had happened to his mother. He didn’t understand how Flynn and Shona could smoke, even though their mother’s cancer had nothing to do with that. He wasn’t their father, though, and he couldn’t order them around, no matter how much he wished he could in this situation.

He saw Flynn arrive and park his car, and as soon as Flynn was out, Niall waved at him. Flynn blinked, then came forward, looking Niall up and down. “I wasn’t sure you’d come,” he said.

Niall frowned. “Maris invited me, too. Why shouldn’t I come?”

“Maybe because you looked like you wanted to either strangle or fuck her son?”

Niall spluttered. “What are you talking about?”

“Don’t think I’m the only one who noticed. Shona and I talked about it, and we agreed that there’s something between you and Billy.”

“He almost killed me with his car!”

“Then maybe you want to strangle him. I’m not so sure, though. I think there’s something more, and I wish you’d tell me.”

“I promise, there’s nothing. The dinner was the second time I talked to Billy, and the first time was when he almost killed me. I haven’t heard from him since, and I wouldn’t know where to find him even if I wanted to see him.”

Flynn arched a brow and gestured at the building they were standing in front of. “How about his mother’s apartment?”

“Billy and I have nothing to do with each other. I swear.”

“I feel like you’re protesting too much, but fine. I’ll act as if I believe you. I want to be the first to know something is going on, though. It’s not fair that Shona is always the one who does.”

“Have you thought that maybe it’s because she’s nicer than you?”

“We both know that’s a lie.”

Luckily—or maybe not so luckily—they were interrupted by Shona. Her eyes glittered, and when she opened her mouth, Niall decided to cut her off before she could say something that would embarrass him.

“Ready to go upstairs?” he asked, trying to keep a cheery voice.

Shona blinked in confusion. “You didn’t even say hello,” she pointed out.

“Right. Hello. Ready to go upstairs?”

“Are you that eager to see Billy again?”

And there was what Niall had been trying to avoid.
